JANESVILLE, WI — Community Mourns After Tragic Murder-Suicide Claims Three Lives at Aspen Square Apartments

The city of Janesville is grieving the tragic loss of three lives following a devastating murder-suicide that unfolded Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the Aspen Square Apartments, located in the 2600 block of North Pontiac Drive. The incident has left residents shaken and authorities piecing together the circumstances behind one of the most tragic events to strike the city in recent memory.

Victims Identified

The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the deceased as:

  • Julia Cvicker, 25
  • Jahvarius Wicks, 21
  • Scott Roberts, 55

All three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene when first responders arrived shortly after 6:00 p.m. Authorities were dispatched to the apartment complex after multiple 911 calls reported gunshots and cries for help coming from one of the units.

Upon entering the apartment, Janesville Police officers discovered the three bodies. The preliminary investigation revealed that Scott Roberts was the shooter, and that he took his own life after fatally shooting both Cvicker and Wicks.

Understanding the Tragedy

Details regarding the exact relationship between the individuals remain under investigation, though early reports suggest a domestic violence situation may have escalated into the fatal encounter. Neighbors reported hearing a heated argument followed by several gunshots.

“It happened so fast,” said one resident who lives in the building adjacent to the crime scene. “One minute it was quiet, the next there were sirens everywhere and police were locking down the area. We’re still in shock.”

Police have not confirmed a motive but have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are interviewing family members and acquaintances of the victims to understand the events leading up to the shooting.

Victims Remembered

Julia Cvicker, 25, was described by friends as bright, compassionate, and full of life. A graduate of Janesville Craig High School, she had been working as a certified nursing assistant and had plans to pursue a nursing degree. Loved ones remember her as someone who was always willing to help others, with a smile that could light up any room.

Jahvarius Wicks, 21, was originally from Beloit and had recently moved to Janesville. Described as soft-spoken and kind, he was passionate about music and worked part-time while preparing to start college courses in the fall. His death has left his family heartbroken.

Scott Roberts, 55, lived in the same complex and is believed to have had a previous connection to one or both of the victims. His motives remain unclear. Authorities confirmed that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after carrying out the double homicide.

Community Shock and Support

The senseless act of violence has sent waves of grief throughout Janesville. City officials, law enforcement, and mental health professionals have offered condolences and are encouraging residents to seek support during this difficult time.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our city,” said Janesville Police Chief David Moore. “Three lives were cut short in an act of horrific violence. Our department will do everything we can to support the victims’ families and the broader community as we process this event together.”

Local grief counselors have been made available at community centers and schools to assist those affected by the tragedy. A candlelight vigil is being planned for this weekend at a nearby park to honor the victims and allow community members to come together in mourning.

A Plea Against Domestic Violence

While officials have yet to release a detailed motive, advocacy groups in Janesville are calling for a renewed focus on domestic violence prevention and mental health support.

“This tragedy underscores the urgent need to recognize the warning signs of domestic violence and provide timely intervention,” said Andrea Keller, director of a local women’s shelter. “We must support survivors and break the silence before lives are lost.”

Resources for those in crisis are being widely shared, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-SAFE) and local support organizations that offer shelter, counseling, and legal assistance.

As Janesville begins the difficult process of healing, the lives of Julia Cvicker, Jahvarius Wicks, and Scott Roberts will not be forgotten. The city mourns the loss of its neighbors and hopes that from this tragedy, stronger efforts toward awareness, intervention, and healing will emerge.

Anyone with additional information regarding the case is urged to contact the Janesville Police Department at (608) 755-3100.
