Legislator Dan Wilson’s Tragic Death in Block Island Plane Crash Leaves Community in Grief

Posted on July 31, 2025 by Usainsightreport

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Dan Wilson, a dedicated legislator from Montgomery County, confirmed on Thursday morning that he was the victim of a fatal plane crash at Block Island State Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Dan Wilson, known for his committed public service and devotion to his community, lost his life in a tragic aviation accident that has left the region mourning the loss of a respected leader and valued member of society.

**Details of the Crash
The private aircraft involved in the accident was a Piper P28A, operated by Condair Flyers Flying Club, a not-for-profit organization based out of Albany International Airport. The plane departed Albany at 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, destined for Block Island State Airport. Flight data and eyewitness accounts reveal a harrowing sequence of events leading up to the crash.

According to reports, the plane made multiple approaches to the runway, circling the airport twice as it attempted to land. On its third landing attempt, the aircraft approached the runway at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour but tragically crashed just short of the runway, coming to rest upside down in a wooded area at the end of the runway. The east end of the runway is elevated, dropping off approximately 50 feet into thick brush, which complicated rescue efforts.

Paul Deane, Chief of Police on Block Island, described the challenges faced by emergency crews: “He apparently circled the airport two times before making a final approach to the runway. It appears as though he landed a little too far towards the end. They essentially cut the whole side of the airplane open to get out the victims who were trapped in there.”

Firefighters used flame-retardant foam to secure the area and cut through dense brush to reach the wreckage, which narrowly missed a parked truck near the crash site. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident, with an NTSB investigator arriving on Thursday to document the scene and examine the aircraft.

**Victims and Survivors
All three passengers aboard the plane were from New York State and reportedly in their 70s. Emergency responders transported them to Block Island Medical Center following the crash. Tragically, Dan Wilson was pronounced dead. The two survivors, a man and a woman, were flown to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Their identities have not been officially released, though CBS6 has contacted a woman who claims her mother was among the survivors. Kelly Brennan, a spokesperson for Brown University Health, confirmed that Rhode Island Hospital is treating the two surviving victims.

The crash has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond, as residents, friends, and colleagues grapple with the loss of Dan Wilson and the serious injuries sustained by the survivors.
