Man Fatally Shot in Officer-Involved Shooting in Winston-Salem Identified as Antonio Irene Betancourt

Winston-Salem, NC – June 28, 2025 – The Winston-Salem Police Department has released new details regarding the fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Nancy Lane Friday afternoon. The man who was killed has been identified as 34-year-old Antonio Irene Betancourt, a local resident who, according to investigators, became violent during a confrontation with law enforcement and discharged a firearm.

Incident Overview

The incident began when officers responded to a call in the 1000 block of Nancy Lane, a residential neighborhood in Winston-Salem. While the exact nature of the initial call has not yet been made public, officials confirmed that it quickly escalated into a violent struggle.

According to police, when officers made contact with Betancourt, he resisted arrest and began physically fighting with officers. During the altercation, Betancourt allegedly produced a firearm and discharged it, prompting officers to return fire. He was fatally shot at the scene.

One officer was struck in the chest, but fortunately, the round hit the officer’s ballistic vest, likely saving their life. That officer was transported to a nearby hospital, where they are being treated and are expected to recover.

Ongoing Investigation

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation, which is standard protocol in any use-of-force incident involving law enforcement officers.

At a press briefing, Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn stated, “This is a tragic and dangerous situation that unfolded very quickly. Our officers acted in response to an immediate and deadly threat. We are thankful that our officer is alive, and our thoughts are with everyone affected, including the family of Mr. Betancourt.”

Authorities have not yet released the name of the officer involved in the shooting. The officer will be placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation, in line with department policy.

Community Reaction

The incident has left the neighborhood shaken, with residents expressing both concern for police safety and sorrow over the loss of life. Community leaders have urged patience and transparency as the investigation unfolds.

“We understand the community’s need for answers, and we are committed to a thorough, independent review of the facts,” said a spokesperson for the State Bureau of Investigation.

Public Assistance and Transparency

The Winston-Salem Police Department urges anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has video footage to contact their office or the SBI. Authorities have indicated that body-worn camera footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

Closing Statement

This shooting marks another chapter in the ongoing national conversation around the use of force and officer safety. While many details are still under review, the department has emphasized its commitment to both officer accountability and public safety.

More updates will be provided as the investigation continues. Anyone with information can contact the Winston-Salem Police Department or the State Bureau of Investigation tip line.
