BIG SKY, MT — On June 30, 2025, at 12:22 p.m., emergency services were dispatched to Ousel Falls Trailhead following reports of a cardiac arrest in progress. The Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue – Big Sky Section, along with Gallatin County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Big Sky Fire Department, responded quickly to the scene, where bystanders were already performing CPR on 66-year-old Mark Hammons of Kentucky.
The incident occurred roughly half a mile from the trailhead, and numerous trail-goers sprang into action to assist. Some helped guide first responders to the location, while others aided in providing CPR and supporting Hammons’ family in the critical moments before professional medical teams arrived.
Once on scene, responders continued lifesaving efforts and transported Mr. Hammons to the trailhead where an ambulance was waiting. Despite all efforts, Mark Hammons was pronounced dead at the scene.
Community Effort Recognized
Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer expressed heartfelt appreciation for the bystanders who acted swiftly and selflessly:
“Many people stopped what they were doing to help—whether by performing CPR, leading responders in, or supporting the family. Bystander CPR is often a person’s best chance at surviving cardiac arrest, and we are grateful to everyone who tried to save Mr. Hammons.”
Sheriff Springer also commended the eight Search and Rescue volunteers who responded without hesitation:
“These volunteers left their jobs and personal lives to respond with the tools and readiness required for such a serious event. Their quick deployment and teamwork were exemplary.”
Remembering Mark Hammons
Mark Hammons, a visitor from Kentucky, had been hiking the scenic trail when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest. His passing was unexpected and heartbreaking for his loved ones and for all who witnessed the scene unfold.
“This was a tragic and sudden event,” Sheriff Springer said. “Our sincere condolences go to the Hammons family. Please know that Mark was not alone—he was surrounded by people who did everything they could to help. You are in our thoughts and prayers.”
A Tragedy Met with Compassion
While the outcome was deeply sorrowful, the incident revealed the power of community and the importance of everyday citizens in emergency response. The courage and compassion shown by hikers, responders, and volunteers alike speak volumes about the strength and unity of the Big Sky community.
