PREEMPTION, Ill. – A devastating head-on collision on U.S. Route 67 near Preemption has left the Mercer County community in mourning, as two men lost their lives in the tragic incident on Tuesday, July 23, 2025.
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred when a southbound vehicle crossed the center line, striking a northbound vehicle head-on. Both drivers, the sole occupants of their respective vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.
