METAIRIE, La. — Lakeside Mall Placed on Lockdown After False Shooting Alarm; Three Injured in Stampede

METAIRIE, La. — Panic erupted at Lakeside Mall in Metairie on Saturday afternoon when a false report of a shooting sent shoppers and employees fleeing in terror. The incident left three people injured in a stampede, though authorities confirmed that no shots were fired. Emergency responders quickly arrived to assess the situation and provide medical attention to those hurt.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the lockdown began shortly after 3 p.m. when mall security received reports of a possible active shooter. Shoppers immediately began running toward exits, seeking safety amid confusion and fear. Officers quickly secured entrances and evacuated patrons in an orderly fashion once the situation was confirmed to be a false alarm.

The three injured victims, ranging in age from 21 to 44, were treated for minor injuries caused by the scramble. One person sustained a sprained ankle, another had bruising from falling, and a third suffered cuts while trying to navigate through the crowded corridors. All were released from nearby hospitals later that day.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes inside the mall as shoppers dropped personal belongings and pushed carts in their rush to escape. Many reported hearing alarms, loud announcements, and the panicked shouts of others. Social media posts quickly spread the news, amplifying the fear among those who had not yet arrived at the mall.

Mall officials confirmed that after a thorough sweep of the premises, no evidence of a shooting or firearm was found. “Our priority is always the safety of our shoppers and staff,” said a spokesperson for Lakeside Mall. “While we are relieved that no one was shot, we take every alarm seriously and follow strict safety protocols.”

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the source of the false alarm. Initial reports suggest it may have been triggered by a mistaken report from a panicked bystander or a miscommunication among staff. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine how the incident escalated.

Local businesses inside the mall noted the disruption affected operations, with several stores temporarily closing their doors until the lockdown was lifted. Employees described tense moments as they helped guide shoppers to safety while staying calm under pressure. “It was surreal,” one store manager said. “Everyone was running, screaming, and trying to get out as quickly as possible.”

Despite the panic, law enforcement praised the prompt response from mall security and first responders, which likely prevented more serious injuries. Officers worked closely with medical personnel to quickly identify those in need of care and ensure everyone remained safe while the building was cleared.

Community members reacted with a mix of concern and relief on social media, sharing personal accounts and emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant in crowded public spaces. Many noted that false alarms can still create dangerous situations, underscoring the need for quick thinking during emergencies.

The lockdown was lifted after about an hour, and normal operations resumed later in the afternoon. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to understand what caused the false report and prevent similar panic in the future. Meanwhile, the community reflects on the dangers posed not just by threats, but by mass panic itself.

The three injured individuals are expected to make a full recovery. Authorities urge shoppers and employees to remain aware, follow safety protocols, and report any suspicious activity to maintain security in public areas.
