Michigan State Police Identify Man Killed in Otisville Standoff as James Jennings

Posted on August 1, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Otisville, MI – The Michigan State Police (MSP) have confirmed that James Jennings, a 54-year-old resident of Otisville, was fatally shot by troopers during a violent standoff on Thursday, July 31, 2025, following a domestic violence incident at a residence on Main Street.

The incident began when MSP troopers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic assault at approximately 6 p.m. The female victim, who sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, managed to escape the home and alert authorities. Her identity has not been disclosed to protect her privacy. Upon arrival, troopers attempted to make contact with Jennings, who had barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to communicate or surrender.

The situation escalated as Jennings, described by police as heavily armed, made threats against officers and exhibited hostile behavior. The MSP Emergency Support Team was deployed to negotiate a peaceful resolution, but Jennings remained uncooperative. After several hours, authorities used a tear gas canister to force Jennings out of the home. As he emerged, Jennings opened fire on police vehicles and equipment, prompting troopers to return fire. Jennings was struck during the exchange and pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or witnesses were injured.

The Michigan State Police emphasized that the incident is under thorough investigation, with the MSP 2nd District leading the inquiry, per protocol, to ensure an impartial review. All involved troopers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which includes analysis of body camera footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence. The case will be referred to the Michigan Department of Attorney General for further review.
