NEWPORT, Ky. — Police responded to a shooting at Newport on the Levee mall Friday evening, leaving one individual injured and transported to a local hospital. Authorities confirmed that the incident involved shots fired inside the popular shopping and entertainment complex.

According to Newport Police Department officials, officers arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire. Security personnel and mall staff assisted in directing law enforcement to the exact location of the incident.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was found with apparent gunshot wounds and received immediate medical attention. Paramedics transported the injured individual to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police confirmed that the suspect remained at large at the time of the initial report. Authorities urged shoppers and staff to seek shelter and remain calm while officers secured the area and began their investigation.

Initial reports indicate that the shooting occurred near one of the mall’s central gathering areas, drawing attention from bystanders and shoppers. Eyewitnesses described hearing multiple loud bangs followed by chaos as individuals sought safety.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the mall’s security cameras to identify the suspect and understand the circumstances that led to the shooting. Officers are also interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence from the scene.

Mall officials issued a statement confirming the incident and expressing concern for the safety of patrons and employees. They emphasized that security protocols were immediately enacted and that the facility will cooperate fully with law enforcement during the investigation.

Authorities have not released information regarding a possible motive or the suspect’s identity, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Newport Police Chief highlighted the importance of community assistance in providing tips and information to aid in identifying those responsible.

Community members and shoppers described shock and disbelief following the incident. Many expressed concern over safety at public venues and called for increased security measures in response to the shooting.
