Obituary: Remembering Hermenegildo Melendez, Veronica Cerda, Rebecca Cerda, and Daniela Cerda

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, a tragic accident on Interstate 45 near Leona, Texas, claimed the lives of five individuals from Houston. The victims—Hermenegildo Melendez, 55; Veronica Cerda, 53; Veronica Denise Cerda, 26; Rebecca Cerda, 20; and Daniela Cerda, 18—were traveling northbound when their vehicle was struck head-on by a southbound pickup truck that had lost control .

The collision occurred around 3:17 p.m. when a 2016 Dodge pickup, driven by 43-year-old Toriano Fair of Dallas, veered off the roadway, struck a guardrail, crossed the median, and collided with the Ford F-150 carrying the Cerda family. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames upon impact. Firefighters from the Centerville and Leona Volunteer Fire Departments responded swiftly, but tragically, all five passengers in the F-150 were pronounced dead at the scene . Toriano Fair was airlifted to CHI St. Joseph Regional Hospital in Bryan with serious injuries.

Hermenegildo Melendez was the driver of the Ford F-150. The Cerdas—Veronica, Veronica Denise, Rebecca, and Daniela—were his passengers. The family was reportedly en route to a family gathering when the devastating crash occurred.

The loss of this family has deeply affected the Houston community. Friends and relatives have expressed their grief and support, remembering the Cerdas as a close-knit and loving family. The tragic incident has prompted renewed discussions about road safety and the importance of vigilant driving.

As investigations continue, authorities are focusing on the circumstances leading to the Dodge pickup’s loss of control. The Texas Department of Public Safety is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
