Off-Duty NYPD Officer Slain in Midtown Manhattan Shooting at 345 Park Avenue

Posted on July 29, 2025 by Usainsightreport

NEW YORK — On the evening of July 28, 2025, a tragic mass shooting unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent 44-story office building in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. The gunman, identified by law enforcement as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, Nevada, opened fire, killing five people, including an off-duty NYPD officer, and injuring at least six others.

The attack began around 6:30 p.m. EDT, when Tamura, armed with a Palmetto State Armory AR-15-style rifle and wearing a bullet-resistant vest, entered the building during the busy evening rush. The skyscraper, which houses major corporate tenants such as Blackstone, KPMG, Bank of America, and the National Football League’s headquarters, was quickly plunged into chaos as gunshots echoed through the lobby and upper floors. Surveillance footage captured Tamura calmly walking into the building with the rifle in hand, before unleashing a barrage of gunfire that sparked widespread panic.

Among the victims was an off-duty NYPD officer, who was working a private security detail and was fatally shot early in the attack. Four civilians also lost their lives, and authorities have warned that the number of casualties may rise as the building is thoroughly searched. The shooting, described as one of the deadliest in recent New York City history, prompted a massive response from the NYPD, FDNY, and FBI, with the area around East 51st and 52nd Streets between Park and Lexington Avenues sealed off, causing significant traffic disruptions.

Tamura was found dead on the 33rd floor of the building, in an office belonging to Rudin Management, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities recovered identification on his body, including a concealed carry permit issued in Las Vegas, though records indicate his firearm permit had been revoked in 2022. Tamura also held an expired private investigator license, and preliminary checks suggest he had no significant criminal background.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, unconfirmed reports and social media speculation have pointed to Tamura’s past as a standout high school football player at Golden Valley High School and Granada Hills in California. Some online sources have suggested that Tamura, who reportedly harbored ambitions of playing in the NFL, may have targeted the building due to its association with the league’s headquarters. However, the NYPD has not confirmed any connection between Tamura and the NFL or other tenants in the building, and investigations into his digital footprint and background are ongoing to determine whether the attack was ideologically driven or premeditated.

Witnesses described scenes of terror, with employees fleeing the building, some with their hands raised under police direction. Nekeisha Lewis, who was near the scene, recounted hearing rapid gunfire and seeing shattered glass, likening the situation to a “war zone.” Employees of firms like Blackstone received emails urging them to evacuate or shelter in place as police conducted a floor-by-floor search of the building.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul addressed the tragedy, urging residents and visitors to avoid the area and expressing grief over the loss of life, particularly the death of the NYPD officer. “Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families,” said a statement from KPMG, one of the building’s tenants, praising the bravery of building security and law enforcement.

The shooting has reignited urgent discussions about gun violence, building security, and mental health in New York City. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to identify the victims and provide further updates on the circumstances surrounding this devastating event. The area around 345 Park Avenue remains under lockdown as federal and state officials review evidence to uncover Tamura’s motives and prevent future tragedies.
