BLOOMFIELD, NM — A tense and tragic encounter unfolded in Bloomfield late Monday night, leaving one officer injured and a suspect dead in an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred just before 11 p.m. on May 26, 2025, during what began as a routine traffic stop but quickly escalated into gunfire.

According to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, Bloomfield Police Department officers had initiated a traffic stop within city limits when, at approximately 10:55 p.m., the situation turned violent. During the stop, the subject reportedly opened fire on the officers, striking one officer in the process. In the chaos that followed, the officer’s weapon was discharged, fatally wounding the suspect.

Authorities have confirmed the suspect was killed at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Officials state that additional details about the suspect, including potential motive or background, will be shared as the investigation continues.

The injured officer was immediately transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington for treatment. As of this report, the officer’s condition remains unknown. Law enforcement officials and hospital staff have not released updates on the extent of the officer’s injuries or prognosis.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the Bloomfield community and surrounding San Juan County, with residents expressing concern and support for law enforcement personnel. The shooting serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers officers face every day while performing their duties—even in what seem to be routine interactions.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, in coordination with state law enforcement agencies and the BPD. As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending a full inquiry into the events of the night.

Authorities have urged the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds. They are also asking anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing case.

In the meantime, community members are rallying around local law enforcement, expressing hopes for the officer’s recovery and calling for peace and unity during this difficult time.
