Over a Honey Bun?!” — Family Tragedy in DeKalb County as Man Fatally Shoots Uncle Over Snack Dispute

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — In a shocking and deeply disturbing case that has left the community stunned, a 29-year-old man is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing his 48-year-old uncle during a heated argument over a honey bun snack.

The tragic incident unfolded in DeKalb County on a quiet residential street, where what began as a seemingly petty disagreement between family members escalated into a fatal act of violence. According to multiple eyewitnesses, tensions flared inside the home when the younger man became enraged after discovering that his uncle had eaten the honey bun he had been saving.

Despite the trivial nature of the dispute, the suspect allegedly stormed out of the house in anger. But what happened next has horrified neighbors and family alike: he returned shortly afterward, armed, and reportedly shot his uncle four times in front of witnesses.

After firing the fatal shots, the suspect called 911 himself, according to police reports. Rather than stay at the scene, he fled into nearby woods, prompting a manhunt that involved multiple law enforcement units. Authorities eventually located and apprehended him without further incident. The firearm used in the shooting was recovered nearby.

The victim, whose name has not yet been officially released pending full family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene. Known to neighbors as a kind, quiet man who often looked out for family, his death has sparked outrage — not just for the loss of life, but for the deeply senseless reason behind it.

“He was a good man,” a neighbor said. “I can’t wrap my head around it. A honey bun? That’s what it was about? This just didn’t need to happen.”

What has further enraged the community is the fact that the suspect, despite being charged with murder, was released on bond. Social media has lit up with comments questioning how such a violent act could result in pretrial release, and many are calling for an immediate review of the case by local officials.

“This wasn’t a misunderstanding. This was a calculated act,” said a relative of the victim. “He left, came back with a gun, and chose to take a life — over a snack. That is not someone who should be free right now.”

The DeKalb County Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Officials have confirmed that the suspect and victim had no prior history of violent conflict, but family members noted there had been long-standing tensions in the household. The suspect reportedly struggled with emotional regulation and had previously shown signs of instability, though no formal mental health evaluation had been conducted before the shooting.

The case has reignited conversations around gun violence, mental health, and the tragic consequences of unresolved family conflict. Community leaders are urging families to seek help before situations escalate and are emphasizing the importance of de-escalation, especially when tempers flare in domestic settings.

As the victim’s family prepares for funeral arrangements, they are calling for justice — and for a legal system that reflects the gravity of the crime.

“This wasn’t just an argument. This was our loved one’s life stolen for something meaningless,” said a grieving cousin. “We want accountability, and we want change.”

Anyone with additional information related to the shooting is asked to contact the DeKalb County Police Department.
