Parlin Woman Charged in Financial Exploitation of Elderly Victims

Parlin, NJ – On May 23, 2025, after an extensive and meticulous investigation led by Detective Corrigan, Akosua F. Frimpong of Parlin was formally charged in a disturbing case of financial exploitation involving two elderly victims—one diagnosed with dementia and another who was the spouse of a hospice patient. This case has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent concerns over the vulnerability of seniors in home care settings.

Frimpong, employed by a Living Assistance Service Company that provides in-home care for the elderly, methodically inserted herself into the lives of the victims under the guise of compassionate caregiving. Trusted to provide support and companionship, she allegedly manipulated that trust to gain access to her victims’ personal and financial information.

According to the investigation, once she had built a rapport with her victims, Frimpong exploited her position to access bank accounts, steal credit cards, and conduct a series of fraudulent transactions—all for her own personal benefit. Authorities say the financial abuse spanned a pattern of calculated deceit and betrayal, with significant sums of money stolen over time.

In one of the most egregious instances, Frimpong is accused of repeatedly taking a dementia-stricken victim on shopping outings, during which she covertly added the victim’s credit card to her Apple Pay account. She then made numerous unauthorized purchases while misleading the victim’s family, falsely claiming that their confused loved one had made the charges herself. This not only drained financial resources but added unnecessary emotional distress to the already struggling family.

To conceal her tracks, Frimpong reportedly used her husband’s bank account, identified as Kwaku A. Darko, to process at least one major fraudulent transaction. Investigators allege that Muhomed Koroma, of Newark, also played a role in the scheme by helping mask Frimpong’s direct involvement, adding a layer of deception to the financial crimes.

As a result of the investigation, the following charges have been filed:

Akosua F. Frimpong:

  • Credit Card Theft
  • Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card
  • Two Counts of Theft by Deception
  • Identity Theft
  • Two Counts of Computer Criminal Activity

Kwaku A. Darko (husband of Frimpong):

  • Theft by Unlawful Taking
  • Computer Criminal Activity

Muhomed Koroma (accomplice):

  • Theft by Unlawful Taking
  • Computer Criminal Activity

This case underscores the deeply troubling issue of elder abuse and exploitation, particularly in settings where vulnerable individuals depend on others for their care and well-being. That such abuse came at the hands of a caregiver—someone trusted to act in the best interest of the victims—has been described as a gross betrayal by local authorities.

Detective Corrigan, whose persistence and detailed investigative work led to the breakthrough, emphasized the need for vigilance and oversight in caregiving environments, urging families to regularly monitor the financial and emotional well-being of elderly loved ones, especially those with cognitive impairments or chronic illness.

As the legal process moves forward, the case of Akosua Frimpong stands as a stark reminder of how easily trust can be manipulated—and how critical it is to implement safeguards for those who cannot advocate for themselves.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges as they continue reviewing financial records and interviewing potential witnesses.

Anyone with relevant information or concerns regarding elder financial abuse is urged to contact their local authorities or elder protection agencies.

Justice for the vulnerable must be pursued relentlessly—and trust, once broken, must be answered with accountability.
