In the early hours of July 13, 2022, Sakiyna Thompson, a 31-year-old woman from New York, arrived at Kayla Hodgson’s apartment in Tamarac, Florida. Thompson, who was two months pregnant at the time, stated that she intended to have a “woman-to-woman talk” with Hodgson, who was dating Thompson’s ex-boyfriend. However, what was meant to be a conversation escalated into a tragic confrontation.
According to Thompson, upon entering Hodgson’s apartment, an argument ensued, during which Hodgson allegedly punched her in the face and cut her stomach with a glass hookah piece. Thompson claimed that in response, she grabbed the glass and blacked out. When she regained consciousness, Hodgson was lying dead on the floor, having been stabbed multiple times.

After the incident, Thompson admitted to changing into Hodgson’s clothes, attempting to clean the scene, and discarding evidence. She then fled back to New York. Prosecutors argued that Thompson had flown to Florida with the intent to kill Hodgson, driven by jealousy over her ex-boyfriend’s new relationship.
During her testimony, Thompson expressed that she did not plan to harm anyone and acted out of fear. She described walking in a pool of blood and being overwhelmed by the situation. The defense contended that Thompson’s actions were in self-defense, highlighting her pregnancy and the alleged initial attack by Hodgson.
The trial, which began in late September 2025, included graphic body camera footage from the crime scene and testimony from a witness who discovered Hodgson’s body. As the jury deliberates, Thompson faces a first-degree murder charge and the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
