SAGINAW, Mich. – Two Men Face Federal Charges After $88,900 ATM Theft at Credit Union

Federal authorities have arrested two men in connection with a brazen early-morning ATM theft that occurred in Saginaw, Michigan, in 2024. The incident, which took place on May 12 at the United Financial Credit Union, resulted in the theft of nearly $89,000 in cash and has now led to serious federal charges for the suspects.

According to investigators, the heist was executed with a high degree of planning and took place under the cover of darkness. At approximately 3 a.m., two masked and gloved men arrived at the scene in a tan pickup truck. Security footage captured by the ATM and surrounding surveillance systems shows the suspects exiting the vehicle and approaching the ATM with crowbars in hand.

The video evidence revealed that the two men forcefully attempted to pry open the machine’s access points. After a struggle with the device, they managed to breach the ATM’s internal vaults, successfully removing approximately $88,900 in cash. The theft was carried out swiftly and with clear intent to evade identification, as both individuals remained covered and took precautions to minimize evidence left at the scene.

Local law enforcement worked quickly, reviewing hours of surveillance footage from the ATM and other nearby cameras. Their investigation identified the pickup truck as a key piece of evidence, leading them to track the vehicle’s movements before and after the theft. With the assistance of federal authorities, the suspects were located and taken into custody. Their identities have not been publicly released as the investigation is ongoing.

The arrested men now face federal charges, which may include conspiracy to commit bank theft, destruction of an ATM, and interstate transportation of stolen property, among others. Federal prosecutors have emphasized the seriousness of the crime, citing the significant amount of stolen cash and the targeted attack on a federally insured financial institution.

“This case demonstrates the swift and effective collaboration between local and federal law enforcement,” said a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “These individuals believed they could outsmart the system, but modern surveillance and investigative techniques brought them to justice.”

Officials have not disclosed whether the stolen money has been recovered, but further details are expected to emerge as the case moves through the judicial system. The United Financial Credit Union has since reassured its members that no personal account data was compromised during the incident, and enhanced security measures are being implemented to prevent future occurrences.

Residents of Saginaw and surrounding areas have expressed both shock and concern over the boldness of the crime. However, many also voiced relief at the rapid law enforcement response and the capture of the suspects.

The incident stands as a stark reminder of the growing sophistication of ATM-related crimes and the importance of constant vigilance and technological upgrades in financial security.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the incident or the suspects to come forward.
