San Antonio Woman Valeen Joy Tellez Passes After Violent Downtown Hotel Incident

In San Antonio, Texas, the city mourns alongside the family of Valeen Joy Tellez, 42, whose life was tragically cut short in a deeply disturbing event inside a downtown hotel. According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), Tellez was found in a hotel room near Interstate 10 and South Laredo Street early Monday afternoon, November 3, 2025, following a violent altercation.

Police reported that at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a call from a family member who feared a possible suicide was taking place. When police arrived, they discovered Tellez lying on the floor of the hotel room with a severe neck injury and signs of a struggle. The suspect, 50-year-old Jose Garcia Meza, was also found in the room suffering from a self-inflicted arm wound. He was immediately transported to a local hospital under police custody.

Tellez, a well-known San Antonio resident, was deeply loved by her family, friends, and colleagues. She was remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the compassion she showed toward others. Her loved ones describe her as someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand and who carried a positive spirit wherever she went. Her passing has left a profound impact on the community, especially those who knew her best.

Investigators revealed that surveillance footage captured Tellez and Meza entering the hotel room together earlier that morning. There were no signs of anyone else entering or leaving before police arrived. Inside the room, detectives found disturbing evidence suggesting a violent confrontation, including bloodstains, damaged furniture, and personal items scattered across the floor.

A handwritten note written in Spanish was also found on the dresser. The note’s translation suggested remorse and confusion, mentioning substance use and asking forgiveness from family and friends. Police also recovered several items of drug paraphernalia, pointing to the possible involvement of narcotics in the tragic incident.

Authorities confirmed that Jose Garcia Meza faces criminal charges in connection with the case. He remains under medical supervision, and investigators have not yet completed an official interview with him due to his condition. The SAPD classified the case as a suspected murder-suicide attempt, based on the note and the nature of Meza’s self-inflicted injuries.

Family members of Valeen Joy Tellez have expressed heartbreak and disbelief. They stated that Meza was not a stranger—he had previously attended family gatherings and was once considered a trusted acquaintance. Relatives are calling for a full and transparent investigation to ensure justice for Valeen and to understand what led to such a horrific act.

The downtown hotel where the tragedy took place is fully cooperating with law enforcement, and the room remains sealed off as forensic teams collect additional evidence. City officials have described the event as rare but devastating, promising continued support for the victim’s family and the police investigation.

As San Antonio grieves, candlelight vigils and community gatherings have been held in Valeen’s memory. Friends and neighbors have shared touching stories about her kindness, her laughter, and her deep love for her family. Flowers and tributes now line the entrance to her neighborhood, symbolizing the affection and respect so many felt for her. Though her passing has left a painful void, those who knew Valeen Joy Tellez are determined to honor her legacy by remembering her for the light, compassion, and strength she brought into their lives.
