SEATTLE, WA — Community Mourns as Victims of Pioneer Square Mass Shooting Are Identified

Posted on May 21, 2025 by Usainsightreport

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the three individuals who lost their lives in a tragic mass shooting that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 17, in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square. The victims, whose names were released Monday morning, were all young adults with deep connections to the Seattle area.

The violent incident unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. near the intersection of 2nd Avenue South and South Main Street, just steps from the Seattle Fire Department Headquarters. This section of Pioneer Square, known for its nightlife, art galleries, and historic architecture, was suddenly transformed into a crime scene marked by chaos and heartbreak.

According to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), officers were dispatched to the scene following multiple reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders and paramedics, three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The victims were identified as:

  • Marcus DeShawn Hayes, 29, of Kent, Washington
  • Julianna “Jules” Nguyen, 24, of Seattle, Washington
  • Luis Fernando Ortega, 31, of Renton, Washington

Authorities said all three individuals were in the vicinity of the incident but have not confirmed whether they were the intended targets or bystanders caught in the crossfire.

“This is a tragic loss of life, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those impacted,” said SPD Chief Adrian Diaz in a statement. “Our detectives are working tirelessly to piece together what happened and to hold those responsible accountable.”

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, canvassing witnesses, and examining ballistic evidence in an effort to determine what led up to the deadly gunfire. No suspects have been arrested as of Tuesday, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The area where the shooting occurred has long been a hub for nightlife and tourism, though it has also faced ongoing concerns around crime and public safety. Saturday’s violence has reignited conversations about the need for increased police presence and social services in downtown Seattle, particularly in areas with high foot traffic after dark.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell addressed the shooting during a press conference Monday afternoon, calling it “an unconscionable act of violence” and vowing that the city would do everything in its power to support the victims’ families and ensure accountability.

“We cannot and will not allow our neighborhoods to be overtaken by gun violence,” Harrell said. “This incident is a stark reminder that more must be done — at every level — to address the root causes of violence and to keep our communities safe.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, community members have begun placing flowers, candles, and handwritten notes near the scene. A vigil is being organized by local leaders and advocacy groups for later this week, intended to honor the lives lost and call for an end to gun violence in the city.

“This could have been any of us,” said community activist Araceli Mendoza, who works with at-risk youth in the area. “We need more than thoughts and prayers — we need change.”

The Seattle Police Department is continuing to investigate and has asked that anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has relevant video footage contact their tip line at (206) 233-5000.

As the city grapples with the weight of this tragedy, leaders and residents alike are left searching for answers — and justice — in the wake of a senseless act that has forever altered the heart of Pioneer Square.
