Serious Collision Involving Amish Buggy and Motor Vehicle in Beaverton Township Under Investigation

Posted on May 6, 2025 by Usainsightreport

On Friday evening, May 2nd, 2025, at approximately 8:25 p.m., Deputies from the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a serious personal injury crash near the intersection of Bard Road and Calhoun Road in Beaverton Township. The incident involved a southbound 2016 Nissan Versa Note and an Amish horse-drawn buggy, also traveling southbound on Bard Road, approximately one-tenth of a mile south of the Calhoun Road intersection.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation indicate that the Amish buggy was carrying a 62-year-old man and his 60-year-old wife, both residents of Clare, Michigan, as well as their two granddaughters, aged 1 and 10, who are from Gladwin. The group was traveling together in the buggy when they were struck from behind by the Nissan, driven by a 61-year-old male from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. The driver of the Nissan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to MyMichigan Health in Midland for treatment. The Amish grandfather, who was operating the buggy, was also transported to Midland Hospital for minor injuries. His wife, who was not physically injured, accompanied him to the hospital.

Tragically, the couple’s granddaughters suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash. After initial treatment at Midland Hospital, both children were transferred to Hurley Medical Center in Flint. At the time of the press release, the children were reported to be in stable but critical condition.

Due to the severity of the crash, Bard Road was closed for several hours as Michigan State Police Accident Reconstructionists conducted a thorough on-site investigation. Law enforcement from the Beaverton City Police Department and first responders from Beaverton Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. Once complete, all reports and findings will be submitted to the Gladwin County Prosecutor’s Office for review and potential further action.

The Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the identities of those involved, pending further investigation and out of respect for the families affected.

Community members are encouraged to keep the injured children and their family in their thoughts during this difficult time. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
