She Chased Down a Kidnapper and Saved a 9-Year-Old Boy: The Heroism of Shameika Dowell

Posted on July 7, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Jacksonville, Florida — In a world where too many choose to look the other way, one woman chose to act. Her name is Shameika Dowell, and thanks to her incredible bravery and quick thinking, a 9-year-old boy is home safe with his family after a terrifying attempted kidnapping on the evening of June 27.

It was just after 9:00 p.m. when the boy was standing near a busy intersection in Jacksonville, selling water to passersby—a common sight during Florida’s hot summer nights. But what unfolded next was anything but ordinary. According to police, 22-year-old Mikaya Williams pulled up in a vehicle and tried to deceive the boy with disturbing ease.

Witnesses say Williams told the child, “Get in the car, your mom sent me,” and then added, “Come here, I got your money.” She reportedly placed the boy’s water cooler in her car and then pushed him into the vehicle—all while the child screamed and cried in protest.

Inside the car, the boy later told police he was terrified—crying, shaking, and begging for help. Williams allegedly turned the music up loud, ignored his screams, and sped off down the road.

But she wasn’t alone. Shameika Dowell, a family friend of the boy who happened to be nearby, noticed the entire incident unfolding. What she did next would change everything.

“I’m looking at someone snatch one of our kids. I had to think fast. I had to move quick,” she told reporters.

Without hesitation, Shameika jumped into her own car and chased after the kidnapper. She caught up with the suspect’s vehicle in a matter of moments, maneuvering her car in front of Williams to block her escape.

In an adrenaline-fueled burst of courage, she ran to the passenger side, kicked the door open, and rescued the boy. With trembling hands and a heart full of determination, she pulled him out of the car, grabbed his water cooler, and held him close.

That singular act of bravery not only saved the child’s life but reminded an entire community of what true heroism looks like.

The Aftermath

Jacksonville police quickly responded to the scene and later arrested Mikaya Williams. Authorities say Williams later told officers that she was “on her crazy medicine” at the time of the incident. She has since been charged with kidnapping and is being held without bond at the local jail. Her first court appearance is set for July 21.

Thanks to the intervention of one woman who chose courage over fear, a tragedy was narrowly avoided. The child’s family is still shaken but overwhelmingly grateful.

“If it weren’t for Shameika, my son wouldn’t be here today,” a family member said tearfully. “She’s our angel.”

Community Reacts

Social media has been flooded with praise for Shameika Dowell, calling her a “guardian angel,” “real-life superhero,” and “an example of what community really means.” Some are even advocating for a community bravery award to be given in her honor.

In a time when stories of violence and tragedy often dominate the headlines, this act of swift, selfless action shines as a powerful reminder: one person can make a difference—and in this case, that person was Shameika Dowell.

From all of us—thank you, Shameika. You are a true hero.
