Shooting in Richmond’s Arts District Under Investigation
Officers Respond to Gunfire on West Broad Street; One Hospitalized, One Detained

Richmond, VA — June 21, 2025 — A sense of alarm and disruption fell over Richmond’s usually vibrant Arts District Friday evening after a shooting unfolded in the 100 block of West Broad Street, prompting a swift police response and the detention of one individual in connection with the incident.

According to the Richmond Police Department, officers responded to the scene shortly after receiving reports of gunfire along the busy corridor of shops, galleries, restaurants, and residential spaces. When officers arrived, they discovered an active scene but no immediate victims present.

Shortly thereafter, police confirmed that one person had self-transported to a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim’s identity has not been publicly released, and their condition remains unknown as of Saturday morning. Authorities have not indicated whether the injury is life-threatening but noted that the individual was able to make their own way to receive medical care—suggesting a degree of mobility post-injury.

In a significant development, one person was detained at the scene and is now being questioned by investigators. Officials have not yet determined whether the detained individual will face charges, stating that the investigation remains very active and ongoing.

The shooting took place in a highly trafficked area of downtown Richmond, just steps away from local landmarks, restaurants, and First Fridays art venues. Witnesses describe a chaotic moment in which people scattered for cover following the sound of multiple gunshots.

“I was just getting off the bus when I heard it,” said one passerby. “There were three or four pops—fast—and then people started running. I didn’t know what was going on, but I saw a couple of people duck into businesses.”

Several businesses temporarily closed for the evening as police established a perimeter and began canvassing the area for evidence. Crime scene tape cordoned off part of the sidewalk as detectives conducted interviews and examined surveillance footage from nearby buildings.

Authorities are asking anyone with information, including video footage from phones or building security cameras, to come forward to assist in the investigation. Tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or anonymously online through the Richmond Police Department’s tip portal.

The incident is the latest in a string of isolated violent events that have rattled otherwise bustling parts of the city. While police stress that this appears to be a targeted incident with no ongoing threat to the general public, the shooting has nonetheless reignited calls from community members and local leaders for increased safety measures in downtown areas, especially during peak evening hours.

“We are committed to making downtown Richmond a safe place for residents, workers, and visitors,” said a spokesperson for the city. “Incidents like this are unacceptable, and we will work tirelessly to ensure accountability and prevent future violence.”

As the investigation develops, Richmond police continue to reassure the public that every effort is being made to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and to ensure the safety of all who frequent the area.

Further updates are expected in the coming days, including more information on the condition of the hospitalized individual and any potential charges against the person currently in custody. The Richmond community, still processing the shock, hopes for a swift resolution—and for healing to follow.
