Gore Springs, MS – May 6, 2025 – An early morning dispute between two men escalated into a violent confrontation on Tuesday, leaving one person seriously injured by gunfire in the parking lot of B’s Grocery, a local convenience store and community hub in Gore Springs.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m., when what began as a verbal altercation between the two individuals rapidly intensified. Witnesses reported hearing shouting before the situation turned physical, ultimately culminating in the discharge of a firearm.
The victim, identified as 29-year-old Dylan Coarsey, sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Due to the severity of his injuries, Coarsey was evacuated via Air Care from the landing pad in Gore Springs and flown to a medical facility for urgent treatment. His current condition has not yet been released.
The alleged shooter, identified as 57-year-old Phillip Wayne Fly, reportedly began experiencing chest pains following the incident. He was transported by ambulance to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada (UMMC-Grenada), where he received emergency medical evaluation and care. After being medically cleared, Fly was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Fly has since been booked into the Grenada County Jail. He is being held on a $50,000 bond and faces a charge of Aggravated Assault, a serious felony under Mississippi law. Authorities have not yet released a motive for the altercation or any further details regarding the relationship between the two men involved.
Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the altercation or who has additional information to come forward.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” said a representative of the Grenada County Sheriff’s Department. “We are working diligently to gather all facts and ensure a thorough understanding of what led to this unfortunate event. The incident has rattled the small, close-knit community of Gore Springs, where violent crime is relatively rare. Residents have expressed shock and concern over the event, which unfolded at a time of day when locals are typically starting their daily routines.
Authorities have not indicated whether surveillance footage from the store or nearby businesses will be used in the investigation, but sources close to the scene suggest video evidence may be reviewed as part of the ongoing effort to determine the exact sequence of events.
