SHOOTING INVESTIGATION – PERSON OF INTEREST SOUGHT IN BISMARCK

Bismarck, ND — The Bismarck Police Department is urgently seeking the public’s assistance in locating 20-year-old Jamall Buckhalter, who has been identified as a person of interest in a shooting that occurred late Monday night near Missio Church, in the 1100 block of South 12th Street.

The incident happened around 11:00 p.m. on Monday, June 24, when officers were dispatched to a report of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, they found a 45-year-old homeless man suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck and shoulder. Officers on the scene administered immediate life-saving care before the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

According to early statements gathered by police, the victim had been handing out pizza near the shelter in the area when he was approached by an unknown individual. Without warning, the man allegedly shot the victim and fled on foot. The motive for the attack is still under investigation, but authorities are treating it as an unprovoked act of violence.

As investigators combed through evidence overnight, Jamall Buckhalter was named as a person of interest in the case. Surveillance footage, witness accounts, and a BPD K-9 unit helped track Buckhalter’s path from the scene, but the trail was lost near the railroad tracks in the vicinity of Airport Road and 24th Street. Investigators believe Buckhalter may have used the tracks to elude capture, and it is unclear whether he remains in the area or has left town.

Authorities released a surveillance image showing Buckhalter’s last known clothing in hopes that someone may recognize him. He is described as armed and dangerous, and the public is strongly advised not to approach him under any circumstances.

The Bismarck Police Department emphasizes that this is an active and evolving investigation. Officers are working tirelessly to locate Buckhalter and ensure the safety of the public. Additional patrols have been dispatched to areas around shelters, known travel routes, and community hubs, and law enforcement is coordinating with nearby jurisdictions in the event Buckhalter attempts to flee the region.

The shooting has prompted concern among local outreach organizations, many of which work closely with the city’s unhoused population. Missio Church and nearby shelters have long served as vital support centers for those in need, and residents are shaken that such violence occurred in a space known for compassion and aid.

As Bismarck reels from this troubling event, city officials urge vigilance, cooperation, and calm. The department assures the public that every resource is being used to bring resolution and justice in this case.

More information will be released as updates become available. For now, residents are urged to remain alert, especially in the areas near South 12th Street, Airport Road, and the railway corridor.

REMEMBER: If you encounter Buckhalter, do not engage. Call 911 immediately.
