ST. JOHN’S, NL — The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has identified 30-year-old Terry Griffin as the victim of a fatal shooting in the west end of St. John’s on Thursday, July 24, 2025. The incident occurred at a residence on Salter Place, where officers responded to reports of gunfire around 10:40 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Griffin deceased with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.
The RNC has classified the shooting as a targeted attack, suggesting the perpetrator specifically intended to harm Griffin. Following the incident, a shelter-in-place advisory was issued for Salter Place and surrounding areas, including Gros Morne Place, to ensure public safety while police conducted their investigation. The advisory was lifted later that afternoon.
The investigation led authorities to a property on Gros Morne Place, where a 48-year-old male suspect was taken into custody. This individual was already facing charges from a prior incident involving uttering threats and assault with a weapon, in which Griffin was one of the victims. While no charges have been laid in connection with Griffin’s death at this time, the RNC is actively exploring potential links between the earlier case and the homicide.
Constable James Cadigan, speaking on behalf of the RNC, appealed to the public for assistance, urging residents to review security footage from the Columbus Drive area, including Salter Place and Gros Morne Place, captured between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Doorbell camera recordings, dashcam videos, or other surveillance footage could provide critical clues about the suspect’s movements or the events leading up to the shooting.
“We are asking for the community’s support,” Cadigan stated. “Even the smallest detail could help shed light on what occurred and bring clarity to a very serious situation.”
The RNC’s Criminal Investigation Division, supported by the Police Dog Services, Tactical Response Unit, and the RCMP Emergency Response Team, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Griffin’s death. The force is working closely with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the precise cause of death.
