Suspect Identified in Pearl Street Mall Attack: Mohamed Soliman Arrested for Allegedly Throwing Molotov Cocktails into Crowd

BOULDER, CO — Authorities have identified the suspect arrested in connection with the violent and chaotic incident that unfolded Sunday afternoon at the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder as Mohamed Soliman. The event, which has shocked the city and drawn national attention, is now being investigated as a potential act of domestic terrorism.

According to law enforcement officials, Soliman was taken into custody just minutes after he allegedly threw multiple Molotov cocktails into a crowd of people gathered at the popular pedestrian mall, where a peaceful demonstration had been taking place. Witnesses described scenes of panic and horror as explosions ignited panic, with some attendees rushing to escape the flames and help the wounded.

The Attack

The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. on June 1, when hundreds had gathered near the Pearl Street Mall, a vibrant cultural and commercial hub, for what had been a calm and nonviolent demonstration focused on environmental justice. Without warning, a man—now identified as 34-year-old Mohamed Soliman—allegedly approached the crowd and ignited what appeared to be glass bottles filled with flammable liquid.

Officials say at least three Molotov cocktails were thrown in rapid succession, igniting patches of fire and sending smoke and panic through the crowd. Emergency responders who were stationed nearby due to the large gathering rushed in within moments to extinguish the flames and provide immediate medical aid.

Multiple victims sustained injuries, including burns and shrapnel wounds from broken glass. Seven people were taken to local hospitals, with two remaining in critical condition as of Monday morning.

Arrest and Charges

Soliman was quickly subdued and taken into custody by Boulder Police Department officers, who had been stationed near the scene for crowd monitoring. According to police, he did not resist arrest.

He is currently being held without bond at the Boulder County Jail and faces an array of charges, including:

  • Attempted First-Degree Murder

  • Use of Explosive or Incendiary Devices

  • First-Degree Assault

  • Arson

  • Reckless Endangerment

  • Terroristic Acts (pending federal investigation)

Local law enforcement officials have confirmed they are working closely with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to determine whether Soliman acted alone and whether there was a broader ideological or organizational motive behind the attack.

Community Shock and Response

The Boulder community, known for its progressive values and peaceful activism, has been left reeling from what many are describing as an unprecedented act of violence in the city’s recent history.

Mayor Aaron Brock issued a statement Sunday evening expressing both heartbreak and resolve:

“This was a brutal and cowardly act meant to terrorize people exercising their right to peaceful assembly. Boulder stands together in the face of hate and violence. We will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law.”

Vigils have already begun to form at the Pearl Street Mall, with flowers, candles, and handwritten signs placed at the scene in support of the victims. Mental health services have been mobilized for those impacted by the incident, including on-site counseling for witnesses and survivors.

Investigation Continues

At a press briefing Monday morning, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold stated that investigators had recovered evidence from the scene, including remnants of incendiary devices and a backpack believed to belong to the suspect.

Authorities have also executed a search warrant at Soliman’s residence, but they have not yet released details on any items seized or whether any manifesto or digital evidence has been discovered.

Chief Herold emphasized the importance of public cooperation:

“We are asking anyone who saw something unusual or who may have recorded footage of the incident to please come forward. Every piece of information helps us better understand what led to this horrific act.”

Who Is Mohamed Soliman?

Public records show that Soliman is a resident of Boulder and has no significant criminal history. However, sources close to the investigation say he may have shown signs of mental health issues in recent months and may have acted in ideological isolation. These claims are still under review, and law enforcement officials have cautioned against speculation as the investigation is ongoing.

Federal agencies are analyzing digital communications and interviewing acquaintances to build a clearer profile of the suspect and to rule out any potential network of accomplices.

A City in Mourning, A Nation Watching

As Boulder grapples with the emotional aftermath of the attack, questions continue to mount about the nature of political and ideological violence in America—and how communities can stay safe without compromising their values of openness and civic engagement.

Local leaders have pledged to increase security at upcoming public events and demonstrations. Meanwhile, calls for unity, compassion, and justice resonate throughout the city and beyond.
