TALLAHASSEE, FL — Arrest Made in Horrific Death of One-Year-Old Child; Deric Young, 25, in Custody

TALLAHASSEE, FL — A tragic and deeply disturbing case has rocked the Tallahassee community following the arrest of 25-year-old Deric Young, who now faces serious charges in connection to the death of a one-year-old child. The Tallahassee Police Department confirmed Young’s arrest on Tuesday, marking a significant development in a case that has shocked both law enforcement and the public alike.

According to authorities, Young was not the child’s parent but was the boyfriend of the woman who had been hired to watch the child the night before the incident. Police state that, at some point, the caregiver left the child in Young’s care—an act that would have fatal consequences. The child was found unresponsive the following day, and subsequent investigation has revealed severe head trauma, allegedly caused by multiple strikes with a closed fist.

The Orlando Medical Examiner’s Office and child protection teams have since confirmed the nature of the injuries, classifying the child’s death as a homicide resulting from blunt force trauma. Investigators say the evidence points clearly to a violent and intentional assault.

“This is one of the most heartbreaking cases we’ve encountered,” said a spokesperson for the Tallahassee Police Department. “No child should ever be subjected to such brutality. We will pursue full justice on behalf of this innocent victim.”

The identity of the child has not yet been publicly released, out of respect for the family and due to the sensitive nature of the case. Authorities did confirm, however, that the child’s family is receiving support and counseling through victim services.

Young is currently being held in Leon County Jail, charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Prosecutors are expected to pursue the maximum penalties under Florida law, and additional charges could follow as the investigation unfolds.

The Tallahassee community is reeling from the horrific details of the case, with many expressing sorrow, anger, and disbelief across social media and community forums. Vigils and calls for justice are already being planned by local residents and child advocacy groups, who emphasize the urgent need for vigilance when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable.

Child safety advocates stress the importance of background checks, supervision, and clear communication when arranging childcare—even through informal networks. “This tragedy is a stark reminder of how quickly and terribly things can go wrong when the wrong person is entrusted with a child’s life,” said a representative from Florida’s Department of Children and Families.

As the case moves forward, police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Detectives continue to interview witnesses and examine all elements of the timeline leading up to the child’s death.

This devastating loss of a young life has left a community heartbroken and searching for answers. As the legal process begins, Tallahassee stands united in grief, demanding justice and recommitting to the protection of its children.
