Teen’s Life Cut Short in Houston Convenience Store Shooting; Suspects at Large

Posted on August 3, 2025 by Usainsightreport

On a warm May afternoon in 2025, the parking lot of a convenience store on Northborough Drive in north Houston became the scene of a tragedy that would leave a community mourning and a family shattered. Just before 4 p.m., 16-year-old Davion Elzy was gunned down, his life cut short by multiple gunshot wounds. Houston Police Department officers arrived swiftly after a call about the shooting, finding the young victim in critical condition. Despite the urgent efforts of paramedics, who rushed him to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, Davion was pronounced dead at the hospital. The loss of a teenager with his future ahead of him has left a profound mark on those who knew him and sparked an urgent manhunt for those responsible.

The Houston Police Department has since charged two suspects in connection with Davion’s death: 19-year-old Cameron Ray and a 16-year-old juvenile, later identified as Carnell Anderson after a district judge approved the release of his name and photo. Both face murder charges in the 496th State District Court, but as of now, they remain at large, evading capture. Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the shooting or the nature of the relationship between the suspects and Davion, leaving many questions unanswered. The lack of clarity only deepens the sense of unease in a community grappling with yet another act of violence involving its youth.

The incident unfolded in broad daylight at a bustling convenience store near the intersection of Northborough Drive and the North Freeway, a location familiar to locals for its constant foot traffic. According to police reports, officers were flagged down by witnesses who reported the shooting in the gas station parking lot. The scene was chaotic, with evidence of gunfire scattered across the area. Investigators, led by HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. Lamont and Detective A. Herrera, worked diligently to piece together the events leading to Davion’s death. Their efforts quickly identified Ray and Anderson as suspects, prompting formal charges after consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

This tragedy is not an isolated event in Houston, where gun violence continues to claim young lives. Just weeks earlier, a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head while eating a Happy Meal in his family’s apartment, caught in the crossfire of a shootout at a nearby complex on the same Northborough Drive. That child survived, but the proximity of these incidents underscores a troubling pattern in the area. Community leaders and residents are now calling for action to address the root causes of such violence, from poverty to lack of opportunity, that too often ensnare young people.

The Houston Police Department is urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the apprehension of Cameron Ray and Carnell Anderson. The HPD Homicide Division can be reached at 713-308-3600, and anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. For Davion Elzy’s family, the pursuit of justice offers little solace in the face of their loss, but the hope remains that answers and accountability will bring some measure of closure. As the search for the suspects continues, the city of Houston mourns a young life lost too soon and grapples with the urgent need to protect its future generations.
