Tempe, AZ — Authorities in Tempe are actively investigating an alleged shooting that occurred near the popular Casey Moore’s Oyster House late Friday night, following what police describe as a heated altercation involving two men and a woman. The incident has left residents and patrons in the typically vibrant neighborhood shaken as investigators work to piece together what transpired.
According to the Tempe Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before midnight in the vicinity of 9th Street and Ash Avenue, a location known for its bustling nightlife and foot traffic. Witnesses reported hearing a series of loud pops, followed by a brief scuffle and shouting outside the historic bar and restaurant.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found evidence indicating that a firearm had been discharged, though no victims were immediately located at the scene. Witnesses informed police that the incident began as a verbal altercation between two male individuals who appeared to have been drinking earlier in the evening. A woman, who was with one of the men, became involved as tensions escalated. According to preliminary reports, the confrontation quickly turned physical before shots were fired.
“It appears this was not a random act,” said Sgt. Maria Montoya, spokesperson for the Tempe Police Department. “Our initial findings suggest the individuals knew each other, and this may have been a personal dispute that spiraled out of control.”
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved but confirmed that all three individuals fled the scene before officers arrived. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses, including Casey Moore’s, is currently being reviewed to identify the suspects and determine the precise sequence of events.
In the hours following the incident, police canvassed the area and interviewed several witnesses. Some reported seeing a dark-colored vehicle speeding away from the scene shortly after the gunshots. One resident, who asked not to be named, told local reporters that they heard “a loud argument, then at least two shots” before watching people scatter from the area in panic.
Emergency medical services were dispatched as a precaution, but as of Saturday morning, no injuries had been reported. However, law enforcement remains concerned that someone involved may have sustained wounds and is avoiding contact with authorities.
Tempe police are urging anyone who may have seen or recorded the incident to come forward. “Community input is crucial in cases like these,” Sgt. Montoya emphasized. “If you have any information — even something you might think is insignificant — please let us know.”
Casey Moore’s Oyster House, a well-known local establishment, has served the Tempe community for decades and is popular among college students, residents, and tourists alike. Management issued a brief statement expressing concern and support for the investigation. “We are cooperating fully with the police and are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all our guests,” the statement read.
The area was cordoned off for several hours overnight while forensic teams combed through the scene, searching for shell casings and other physical evidence. By Saturday afternoon, the scene had been cleared, and business in the area was slowly resuming, though the community remains on edge.
As the investigation continues, police have increased patrols in the downtown Tempe area to reassure the public and deter any further incidents. The department has not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made or if charges will be filed.
