Tragedy in West Newton: Melissa Hunt, 36, Killed in Violent Incident; Craig Hameister in Custody as Homicide Investigation Unfolds

WABASHA COUNTY, MN — A peaceful summer afternoon in the normally quiet West Newton area of Wabasha County was shattered on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, when a violent incident claimed the life of Melissa Hunt, a 36-year-old local woman. Authorities have confirmed that Hunt died from severe injuries sustained in what officials are now treating as a criminal act, and one man — Craig Hameister — is currently in custody in connection with the case.

According to a statement released by the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a distress call in the West Newton area on Wednesday afternoon. Upon arrival, first responders found Hunt gravely injured at the scene. Despite immediate life-saving efforts and emergency medical attention, she later succumbed to her injuries.

The nature of her wounds has not been publicly disclosed due to the ongoing investigation, but Sheriff’s officials were quick to determine that the circumstances surrounding her death warranted the launch of a full-scale criminal investigation. Evidence collected at the scene and witness accounts pointed to an act of violence rather than an accident or natural cause.

As detectives began piecing together what happened, attention soon turned to Craig Hameister, whose relationship to Hunt has not yet been confirmed publicly. Hameister was quickly identified as a person of interest and was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

Authorities have not specified the exact charges pending against Hameister, but sources close to the investigation indicate that murder or homicide charges are likely as the case develops. Officials have also confirmed that no other suspects are being sought at this time, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

“This was a senseless act of violence that has deeply shaken the people of Wabasha County,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a written statement. “We are working diligently to ensure justice is served for Melissa Hunt and her family.”

The West Newton community, known for its scenic bluffs and quiet rural lifestyle, is reeling from the tragedy. Neighbors described Hunt as a kind-hearted and gentle individual who was active in the community and always willing to lend a helping hand. Many expressed disbelief that such a horrific act could happen so close to home.

“I just can’t believe this happened here,” said one local resident who knew Hunt. “She was a sweet woman, always smiling, always doing things for others. It’s heartbreaking.”

A memorial of flowers and candles has begun to form near the site where Hunt was found, as friends, neighbors, and family members begin the difficult process of grieving and searching for answers.

The Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has joined the investigation to assist with forensic analysis and case development. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward, especially anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area on the afternoon of June 18.

As the investigation continues and formal charges are prepared against Craig Hameister, the community waits with heavy hearts, hoping for justice and healing in the wake of this devastating loss.

Further updates will be released by authorities as more information becomes available.
