Tragic Crash Claims Life of Southport Man: Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Identifies Victim
Southport, NY – The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the victim involved in a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred last Friday on Jerusalem Hill Road. The deceased has been identified as Andrew Marangoni, 42, of Allen Street in the Town of Southport.
Authorities responded to the scene after reports of a serious motor vehicle accident were received late Friday evening. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a severely damaged vehicle off the roadway and identified Marangoni as the sole occupant. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation indicates that Marangoni was traveling westbound on Jerusalem Hill Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle. Evidence suggests that he overcorrected after losing traction, causing the vehicle to cross the eastbound lane and leave the roadway. The car ultimately collided head-on with a tree.
It was also confirmed that Marangoni was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of the outcome. Deputies at the scene collected evidence that indicates alcohol and/or other substances may have been involved, although toxicology results are pending and will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
The crash has sent shockwaves through the Southport community, where Marangoni was known to many. Friends and neighbors have expressed sorrow at the tragic loss and concern over the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“We’re heartbroken,” said one longtime neighbor. “Andy had his struggles, but he was a good guy with a big heart. This is such a terrible end.”
The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has reiterated the importance of safe driving habits—wearing seat belts, obeying speed limits, and never driving under the influence. This incident serves as a somber reminder of how quickly poor decisions behind the wheel can lead to irreversible tragedy.
Sheriff William Schrom offered condolences on behalf of the department, stating:
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Marangoni during this incredibly difficult time. We urge all drivers to recognize the deadly risks associated with impaired and reckless driving.”
No additional vehicles were involved in the crash, and no other injuries were reported. The investigation remains active, with final findings to be released following completion of forensic analysis and toxicology testing.
As Southport mourns the sudden loss of Andrew Marangoni, local officials and residents alike hope his tragic death will serve as a wake-up call—a powerful reminder of the value of life and the consequences that can result from a single moment of inattention or poor judgment behind the wheel.
Funeral arrangements for Marangoni have not yet been announced.
