Two separate vehicle collisions occurring in different counties in Oklahoma have resulted in two fatalities and left several individuals hospitalized, according to information released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).
Fatal Collision in Oklahoma City
The first of the two incidents occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, May 2, on Interstate 44 westbound at Western Avenue in Oklahoma City, located in Oklahoma County. Authorities report that the crash took place around 2:03 a.m. and involved a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2020 Nissan Kicks.
The OHP stated that the Silverado was being driven by 29-year-old Sergio Ibarra of Norman. He sustained leg and internal injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to Baptist Hospital, where he was admitted in fair condition. His passenger, 36-year-old Alex Alvarado of Chicago, Illinois, was also injured and taken to OU Medical Center with leg injuries. He, too, was listed in fair condition at the time of reporting.
Tragically, the driver of the Nissan Kicks, identified as 23-year-old Katelyn Callahan of Oklahoma City, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Her vehicle was carrying three passengers — two 17-year-old females from Garber and 24-year-old Tristen Cherry of Oklahoma City. All three were rushed to nearby medical facilities and are currently listed in critical condition, each suffering from serious internal injuries.
OHP’s preliminary findings reveal that seat belts were only in use in the Silverado at the time of the crash. The extent of injuries and fatalities has prompted further investigation into the cause of the collision, which is being handled by Trooper Chad Pape of the OHP Traffic Homicide Unit.
Reports also indicate that multiple occupants in both vehicles were pinned inside the wreckage following the impact, though none were ejected from their vehicles. Emergency responders had to work meticulously to free the victims, a process that delayed the clearing of the highway for several hours.
