Two Indiana Motorcyclists Killed in Tragic Crash on Illinois Route 394

GLENWOOD, IL – June 28, 2025 ; A devastating motorcycle crash on Illinois Route 394 claimed the lives of two young Indiana residents late Friday night, according to the Illinois State Police (ISP). The fatal incident occurred at approximately 9:51 p.m. on June 27, just north of Glenwood-Dyer Road in southern Cook County, near the Illinois-Indiana border.

Victims Identified

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased as:

  • Sarah Gudeman, 24, of Michigan City, Indiana
  • Justin Fasnacht, 22, of Crown Point, Indiana

Authorities responded swiftly to the scene of what turned out to be a two-motorcycle collision. Preliminary investigative reports indicate that two motorcycles were traveling northbound on IL-394 when tragedy struck. The motorcycle operated by a male rider reportedly collided with the rear of a second motorcycle operated by a female rider, triggering a crash that ejected both riders and caused catastrophic injuries.

Victims Identified

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased as:

  • Sarah Gudeman, 24, of Michigan City, Indiana
  • Justin Fasnacht, 22, of Crown Point, Indiana

Sarah Gudeman was pronounced dead at the scene, succumbing to the traumatic injuries caused by the impact. Emergency personnel transported Justin Fasnacht to Community Hospital in Munster, where he later died from his injuries.

Both riders were reportedly wearing helmets at the time of the crash, but the force of the impact and subsequent fall proved fatal.

Roadway Shut Down During Investigation

In the aftermath of the crash, Illinois State Police and emergency responders closed down northbound IL-394 to conduct a thorough investigation and allow for the safe removal of wreckage. The road remained closed for several hours and reopened around 3:00 a.m. Saturday, ISP confirmed.

Accident reconstruction experts were brought in to determine the speed, point of impact, and other contributing factors. Investigators are working to ascertain whether mechanical failure, road conditions, visibility, or speed played any role in the crash.

Community in Mourning

The tragic deaths of Sarah Gudeman and Justin Fasnacht have left their respective hometowns in grief. Both in their early twenties, they were described by friends and family as vibrant, adventurous, and deeply loved.

Sarah Gudeman, originally from Michigan City, was known for her free spirit, her love of the outdoors, and her passion for motorcycling. She was a recent college graduate and had dreams of pursuing a career in environmental conservation.

Justin Fasnacht, a Crown Point native, had a reputation for his easygoing demeanor and enthusiasm for working with his hands. A mechanic by trade, he often helped fellow riders with repairs and maintenance and had a close-knit group of friends in the local biking community.

“They both lived life with a sense of freedom and purpose,” said one mutual friend. “They were doing something they loved when this happened. That doesn’t make it easier, but it reminds us how fragile and precious life is.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Illinois State Police have confirmed that the investigation remains active, and no additional details about the cause of the crash have been released at this time. Toxicology reports and witness statements are still being collected as part of standard procedure in fatal collision cases.

Authorities have not indicated any signs of impairment, and no other vehicles were involved.

A Cautionary Reminder

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with motorcycle riding—even among experienced riders. ISP officials are reminding all motorcyclists to maintain safe distances, use defensive riding techniques, and remain alert to sudden changes in traffic or road conditions.

“This was a deeply tragic event that claimed two young lives far too soon,” said a spokesperson from the Illinois State Police. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Ms. Gudeman and Mr. Fasnacht. We urge all riders to take extra care, especially on high-speed roadways like Route 394.”

Final Arrangements

Details regarding memorial services for Sarah Gudeman and Justin Fasnacht have not yet been publicly announced. Both families have requested privacy as they grieve this profound loss.

In the wake of the accident, local motorcycle clubs in Indiana and Illinois are reportedly planning a tribute ride to honor the lives and memory of the two young riders whose journey ended far too soon.

Rest in peace, Sarah and Justin. Your lives touched many, and your memories ride on.
