UPDATE: Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting on Longridge Avenue, Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, LA – Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) has made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of June 23 on Longridge Avenue. The tragic incident claimed the life of Marion Griffin, a 27-year-old Baton Rouge resident, and sent shockwaves through the local community.

UPDATE – SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

BRPD Homicide detectives, with critical support from the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, have taken Eriq Overstreet, 27, into custody. Overstreet has been formally charged with Second-Degree Murder following an intense manhunt and investigative efforts that led to his apprehension.

According to investigators, Overstreet and Griffin were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into gunfire. Detectives believe that during the confrontation, Overstreet produced a firearm and shot Griffin before fleeing the scene. Griffin was rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency responders but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Overstreet was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, where he awaits further legal proceedings.

Baton Rouge Police officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 11,000 block of Longridge Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the scene tense and chaotic. Witnesses informed police that two men had gotten into a heated argument just moments before the shots rang out.

Officers quickly secured the area and began interviewing potential witnesses while emergency medical services transported Marion Griffin to the hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced deceased due to the severity of his wounds.

The fatal shooting has left the Longridge Avenue neighborhood mourning the loss of a young man many described as quiet, thoughtful, and deeply loved by his family and friends. Griffin’s death marks yet another tragic instance of gun violence that continues to plague communities across Baton Rouge.

Neighbors expressed frustration and sadness, with several calling for increased mediation resources, youth intervention programs, and community-led violence prevention initiatives. “This senseless violence has got to stop,” said one local resident. “We’re tired of burying our loved ones over arguments.”

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Though a suspect is now in custody, BRPD emphasizes that the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives are working to determine the full sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting and are reviewing surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and witness testimony.
