White Castle, La. (WAFB) — Longtime Town Clerk Arrested for Felony Theft and Malfeasance in Office

Posted on May 23, 2025 by Usainsightreport

A decades-long career in public service has ended in scandal as Monica Lee, a trusted municipal employee in the small town of White Castle, Louisiana, faces serious criminal charges. According to law enforcement, Lee, 52, was arrested on Friday, May 23, on charges of malfeasance in office, felony theft, and attempted felony theft following an investigation into financial discrepancies within the town’s accounts.

Lee had been employed with the Town of White Castle for an impressive 27 years and had served as the town clerk for the last 11 years—a role that placed her at the heart of the municipality’s day-to-day administrative and financial operations. As town clerk, Lee would have been responsible for handling public records, overseeing finances, and ensuring the smooth management of the town’s governmental functions.

However, her long-standing reputation is now under scrutiny. According to officials, Lee allegedly deposited checks intended for the Town of White Castle into her personal bank account. The total amount of misappropriated funds is estimated at $2,700. While this may seem minor compared to large-scale embezzlement cases, the breach of public trust and the misuse of her position have made this a significant and troubling matter for the local community.

Authorities became aware of the suspected wrongdoing thanks to a local banking institution, which noticed irregularities in the transactions. The bank flagged the suspicious deposits and notified law enforcement, triggering an investigation that led to Lee’s arrest. The involvement of the financial institution was key in tracing the funds and ensuring that the case was brought to light before further losses could occur.

White Castle, a small town in Iberville Parish with a close-knit population, has been left stunned by the allegations. Many residents knew Lee personally or through her long-standing presence at town meetings and civic events. Her arrest marks a somber moment for a town where public officials are typically seen as neighbors and community leaders.

The charges of malfeasance in office and felony theft are especially serious. Malfeasance in office is a charge brought against public officials who misuse their position for personal gain or to commit illegal acts. Felony theft in Louisiana typically involves the theft of property or funds exceeding $1,000, while attempted felony theft refers to efforts to unlawfully obtain similar amounts without success.

Local officials have stated that they are cooperating fully with the investigation and are reviewing internal policies and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. No public comments have been made by Lee or her legal representatives at this time.

As the case progresses through the legal system, questions remain about how long the alleged thefts occurred and whether additional funds may be missing. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges or revelations may arise.

The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the importance of oversight and transparency in local government operations. For White Castle, the focus will now shift to restoring public trust and ensuring accountability at every level of town administration.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed as the case unfolds and to participate in town meetings where leaders plan to address concerns and outline measures for greater financial oversight.
