Inglewood, Calif. — A quiet Friday afternoon turned chaotic when a former employee opened fire at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, critically injuring two female staff members before being apprehended by authorities.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. inside an administrative office on the college’s campus, located at 8911 Aviation Boulevard. Inglewood police responded swiftly to multiple reports of gunshots from within the building, which houses the college’s main administrative and admissions departments.
Upon arrival, officers found two women suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel administered aid at the scene before transporting both victims to a nearby hospital. According to officials, both women remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive medical care.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is believed to be a former employee of the college. He was taken into custody without further incident shortly after the shooting. Authorities have not disclosed whether the victims were targeted or if the attack was random. Police also declined to provide specific details on the weapon used, pending further investigation.
“This was a tragic and violent event that shook our campus community,” said a representative from Spartan College in a brief statement released late Friday evening. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured staff members and their families. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and will continue to support our community in any way we can.”
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. According to sources close to the investigation, there had been no prior threats reported, and the suspect did not appear on any active security watchlists. However, authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing staff and students who were present on campus at the time.
The campus was immediately placed on lockdown following the shooting, and students were escorted out of buildings under police supervision. The lockdown was lifted later in the evening after the area was secured.
Parents and loved ones of students and staff gathered outside the perimeter, anxiously awaiting news. “I was just praying my daughter was safe,” said one parent, whose child attends classes at the college. “You never think something like this will happen so close to home.”
Local officials praised the quick response by emergency services and law enforcement. “The swift action by our officers helped prevent further tragedy,” said an Inglewood Police Department spokesperson during a press briefing. “We are continuing to gather information and will release further updates as they become available.”
Counseling services are being made available for students, staff, and faculty affected by the incident. The college has also announced that it will suspend classes for at least the next several days while authorities complete their investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Inglewood Police Department or submit tips anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline.
